• Transitioning Tips

We’ve often heard people say that “natural hair isn’t for everyone,” but we TOTALLY disagree. If you want it, it’s for you. And the good news is that there is no right or wrong way to wear your natural hair. Some of us like it straight, others with a little wave or curl, and others love rocking out with the biggest boldest fro. Whatever you’re into, it’s totally possible to achieve without harsh chemicals. Even though there are no rules you have to stick to in order to achieve your personal hair goals, there are a few tricks to keeping your hair healthy and happy during (and after) your transition into a natural haired beauty. Here are a few of our fave transitioning tips:

  1. Cleanse your hair regularly. Many natural hair experts endorse co-washing instead of shampooing. While we agree that shampooing too often, and with the wrong products, can be detrimental to your locks, it’s important to make sure your hair is clean. So get a good moisturizing and sulfate-free shampoo, and wash out all of the dirt, butters and other product in your hair to promote healthy growth. Just try not to do it more than once per week!
  2. Moisturize your hair…often. Dry hair leads to breakage and excessive shedding. Keep your tresses happy (and on your head) by moisturizing with a good leave in and sealing with a hair butter and/or oil.  Good starter options are natural shea butter and jojoba oil.
  3. Set it and forget it! As you’re transitioning your “new” natural tresses will (clearly) feel very different from your chemically processed hair. Try try try to resist the urge to spend entire days with your hands in your hair. The point where natural and chemically processed hair meet is very fragile and prone to breakage. Unless you plan to do a big chop (which is totally an option) handle this hair with care and, in fact, try not to handle it very much at all. Your best bet is to set your style for the day and let it do its thing!

Growing out your natural hair absolutely requires a little patience and TLC, but it can also be a healthy and fun option. A little research about the process will go a long way to figuring out what works for you. We’re here to help if you need us!
